A Little History Lesson on Montgomery

Montgomery has been known to be the center of the local agriculture scene. Some time ago, it was the center of the booming cotton industry, it then expanding to become a major hub for steel and other agricultural produce. The main reason behind the economic prosperity was the Alabama River that curved right past the town and met up with the extensive rail network that crisscrossed through Montgomery. Today, the economic base has shifted and now the major employers are no longer in steel and agriculture, but rather are from the military and defense sectors.

Recommended Places to Eat in Montgomery

Almost Home Montgomery temporary housing does come with a fully outfitted kitchen.  However, do step out on the town from time to time and sample the culinary delights that can be found here.  Here are a few recommendations:
  • Sa Za on Commerce St.: Sa Za serves some serious pizza in this place. The cocktails here are also good. The House Infused Vodka Martini is delightful and so is the Espresso Martini. As for pizzas, well, for the mild of heart, go with Grandma’s Pizza and for the more adventurous, try the Firenza, where you get a layer of goat’s cheese, caramelized onions grape tomatoes and mozzarella.  Additionally, the Wild Mushroom Pizza should be selected at least once.  It features porcinis, morels, chanterelles, all sauteed with roasted garlic and demi glazed with sherry then showered with goat’s cheese and fresh mozzarella.
  • Wintzell’s Oyster House on Commerce St.: The name says it all. Enjoy some of the best recipes that grace this little crustacean. But the oysters aren’t the only thing that will put a smile on your face. Here there are all kinds of seafood delights, from Homemade Lump Crab Cake to Seafood Gumbo. You may also want to try the cream of Crab Soup and the Fried Oyster Salad. The Fried Catfish Dinner is also a favorite here.
  • Steak-Out on Carter Hill Rd.: If you’ve been around the South much, you will know that this string of restaurants is quite the hit down here. Their concept is pretty interesting. Essentially, they deliver food to your door. Don’t want to leave your furnished apartment but also don’t want to cook?  Give them a call.  It’s like having a pizza delivered, except it’s steak, not pizza. They have Ribeye, Sirloin, Chopped Steak Grilled Shrimp and Grilled Chicken Fillet. Then from there you get to add on all the fixings, including salads, rolls and condiments. You can also have steak sandwiches.
  • Jubilee Seafood on Wooley Rd.: If you’re in the mood for some southern cooking, then this place has you covered. Try their Blackened Snapper or their West Indies Plate. Their Gumbo is becoming legendary. The a specialty menu has some unique items, the Watermelon Salad, for instance, with Baby Arugula, French Feta and Toasted Almonds. Also, try the Baked Oysters Jubilee or the Sauteed Scamp topped with Lump Crab and Lemon Butter Sauce.
  • Martin’s Restaurant on Carter Hill Rd.: This family owned place has been in the map since the thirties. If you want old-school, southern fried dinners, this is the place to get them.  Here is a sample of their menu: Fried Catfish, Grilled Pork Chops, Fried Chicken Livers, Smothered Fried Chicken, and a whole lot more. This place is a icon of the South. It’s a casual place where you can grab a bite to dine in or take home.

Things to do in Montgomery

  • Museums: There are a number of museums in Montgomery that you should take the effort to visit while you are here. The first on the list is the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts on Museum Dr. There is also the The Hank Williams Museum on Commerce St. There are some amazing collections that pass through here in addition to the resident displays. Then there is the Rosa Parks Museum on Montgomery St and Old Alabama Town on Columbus St.
  • Performing Arts: There is a lot of deep cultural experience for anyone to enjoy in Montgomery, especially if you are open to new experiences. Amidst the various performing arts theaters you will find the spirit that moves this city. There will always be entertainment for you to enjoy here, and to help find an appreciation for your new home. To get to know this place, visit the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre on Tallapoosa St.
  • Golf: There are a number of awesome golf courses across this state. Some of them are in and around Montgomery, like Lagoon Park Golf Course, located on N Eastern Blvd. This is a well manicured course with long fairways and challenging greens, it will provide sufficient challenge.  Tallapoosa Lakes Golf Course on Dozier Rd is also well maintained course that caters to the average player.  And finally, there is the Cottonwood Golf Club on Byron Nelson Blvd.
