The first thing I think of when I hear Savanna, GA is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack; because that’s almost what you feel like in this town. It’s the mystery and the food as well as the air of southern class and hospitality that infuses every part of everyday living. This town is like no other, not in the state, not in the country and certainly not anywhere else in the world. Count yourself lucky that you will be living here for some time, if this is where you’re headed. The economic drivers of this genteel city are activities of the Port of Savannah, which is the fourth largest port in terms of container traffic; tourism, which grows every year; and manufacturing, which includes a wide area of industry. There is also the military aspect of the city’s growth. The unemployment rate here is presently hovering at about 10.4%, off its highs of 11.7%. It is still lower than neighboring Atlanta’s 10.9% but higher than Charleston’s 6.2%.
The weather here is humid where the summers are long, warm and wet. The temperature can get up into the 90s and on some occasion set records at 105°F. The temperatures are above the 80s from May all the way to September, after which is begins to taper off into the 60s and on down to the low 40s in February. Dressing here is complicated if you’re not used to it. Suits are widely used but make sure you get the proper weave or the heat and humidity are going to be stifling. There will, no doubt be air-conditioning in whatever furnished apartment in Savannah you choose, but you might be better off outside on the sidewalk with a good fan.
Once you settle into your Savannah corporate apartment make sure you get out and explore your surroundings. Walk to as many places as you can, leave the car for long journeys and find out if you can take public transport to places you need to be. Spend time in the city while you do your work. Things to do in Savannah
On your days off, get to one of the many museums and explore the history of this unique and enchanting place. Play golf when you have the chance and get to know which course you like the best so you can invite your associates. Whenever you need something, there is always the local mall.- Museums: The city is steeped in history. From its background in marine exploration to being the center the South’s economy there are many veins of history here to follow up on as you soak in the city during your stay. Make sure your life doesn’t just revolve around work and rushing back to your temporary housing in Savannah. Go see the Coastal Heritage Society on Martin Luther King Blvd. And do not miss the SCAD Museum of Art on Turner Blvd. as well as the Jepson Center for the Arts on W York St. There is also the Ralph Gilbert Mark Civil Rights Museum on MLK JR Blvd.
- Golf: There are a number of exclusive Golf Clubs in Savannah but you’d need to be a member to play there, however there are a few public courses that are brilliantly kept and offer players varying degrees of challenge. Try the Crosswinds Golf Club on James D Blackburn Dr. There is also the Henderson Golf Club on Al Henderson Dr. and Hunter Golf Club on Perimeter Rd.
- Malls: There is no shortage of malls in Savannah. There are some outside the city limits and some within. If you are in the mood to drive, head out to the Savannah Mall on the southern edge of the city. Otherwise there is the Oglethorpe Mall on Abercorn St. or the Wright Square Antique Mall on State St. This is a very specialized mall at which you will find some very interesting things. After all Savannah is known for her charm.
- Performing Arts: To enjoy an evening of entertainment filled with humor or tragedy, class or poetry, fanfare or intrigue, you need to step into some southern charm. There are a number of theaters that will deliver the best you can imagine. Try the Muse Arts Warehouse on Louisville Rd, The Savannah Theater on Bull St, The Bay St Theater on Jefferson St and the Wormhole Bar on Bull St.
- Parks & Recreation: There will come a time where you just want to take a stroll and the best places to do that in the city is in one of the many parks that dot the landscape of the city. Â The Forsythe Park on Drayton St is a good place to stretch out and enjoy the city air, so is Lake Mayer Park on E Montgomery Cross Rd and then there is Mother Matilda Beasley Park.
