History

Being a temporary resident in Houston corporate housing need not relegate you to feeling like a complete outsider. Acquaint yourself with Houston’s history by reading our brief historical summary provided below. Houston was the brainchild of two real estate investors, Augustus and John Allen. They purchased almost 7000 acres along the Buffalo Bayou desirous of erecting a city. They named the city after Sam Houston, the general of the Battle of San Jacinto. The city was incorporated in 1837. It soon set its sights on building port services along the Buffalo Bayou and together with the rail network that was built, Houston became a transportation hub with land and sea facilities. This prominence of the railroad hub made Houston a leading center for the export of cotton. In 1907, digging for the deepwater port began and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson opened the deepwater Port of Houston. Port activities expanded, but later came to a halt at the height of World War II. However, the petroleum industry of Houston continued to enrich the locals and provide a great service to the country by keeping the gas flowing towards the war effort. Ellington Field, built during World War 1, was revitalized and became the nation’s training center for bomber pilots and navigators. The one thing that precluded companies from setting up their offices in Houston was the heat. In 1950, when air-conditioning became prevalent, Houston offices began using them and that caused an expansion of the city’s work force.
