History

The original inhabitants recorded by history are the Tequestas who dominated the southern Florida Peninsula, specifically the Atlantic Coast from Miami to the Keys. Evidence suggests their presence in this area for a few millennia before the arrival of the Spanish explorers. It was Pedro Menendez de Aviles who claimed the area for Spain in 1566 when, soon after, a mission was set up. The Spanish controlled the area until the arrival of the British at which point the two nations continuously warred over control of the territory. At the point it entered the United States, Miami was under the Spanish. The United States eventually built Fort Dallas here in 1836 with the main purpose of suppressing the Seminole tribe. However that was not the reason the city of Miami, at that time still known as Biscayne Bay County, took hold. It wasn’t until Julia Tuttle persuaded Henry Flagler to extend his railroad to Miami that resulted in the growth.
